How to Make Heart-Shaped Macaron Shells + Free Template
Heart-shaped macarons look super cute, expensive, and impossible to make at home. But the reality is – once you can bake the typical round-shaped macarons, you can for sure make your own heart-shaped macarons as well.
The only difference is the piping method. Piping the round macarons, you need to pipe macarons at a 90-degree angle directly straight from the top to the bottom.
But in the case of heart-shaped macarons, you will need to pipe diagonal lines from the top left, and from the top right corner to the center applying more pressure at the top than at the bottom. The heart bottoms need to be tighter than the top.
Making the heart-shaped macarons using a silicone mat
For the heart-shaped macarons, I love using the Silicone Mat that already has built-in heart templates with a little edge. It helps the macaron shells to turn out identical.
When using a template with built-in hearts, just pipe the batter to the silicone mats. Use a toothpick to help the batter reach the edges – by doing that, the macarons will turn out the prettiest.

Making your own heart-shaped macaron template
If you don’t have this kind of template, it is totally fine! You can easily make a template by yourself. You will need a piece of paper and a dark marker – draw the heart on the paper using a dark marker. Now take a Silicone Baking Mat and place the heart template under it – if you used a dark wide marker, you should see the heart lines through the paper.
Draw the identical hearts next to each other, leaving a little room between each heart. Once ready, place the paper that is full of hearts, below the see-through silicone baking mat or Parchment Paper. See the photos below.
How to pipe the heart-shaped macarons
Piping the heart-shaped macarons is totally different from piping the basic round macarons.
Starting from the top left corner pipe a diagonal line to the center, applying more pressure at the top than at the bottom. Do it like that as the bottom needs to be tighter than the top.
Now it is time to move the piping bag up to the top right corner and pipe a diagonal line back to the center, meeting the first line.
As you want to have the pointy tip, you can’t have too much batter at the bottom. To make the bottom pointier, use a toothpick and gently model the tip. Macarons will get rounder while baking, so if you want a beautiful heart-shaped shell, you need a toothpick to make the pointy tip at the bottom.
TIP: Sometimes it is hard to get the macarons off the silicone baking mat as they tend to stick to the mat. In that case, I recommend putting the silicone mat with the macarons into the freezer!
Wait around 30 minutes and take them out. Remove the macarons fast from the silicone mat before they start to warm up. With the help of your fingers, gently press on the bottom of the silicone mat to help the macarons get off.
Enjoy your beautiful heart-shaped macarons!
