Making the macaron shells

Firstly, you have to bake the macaron shells. I have written a comprehensive guide on how to make perfect macarons at home.

For perfect white macaron shells, it is highly recommended to use this recipe. It uses an Italian method and it is the best way for making white macaron shells without food coloring. Using this recipe will give you the smoothest shells, which are the best for painting on it.

Once macaron shells are ready, it is time to paint the flowers!

Put your white macaron shells on the plate or tray. Paint the flower lines using an edible pink and yellow food marker.

Gently brush the flowers with pink and yellow food coloring using a brush. Be careful to not overdose on the food coloring as it can get very dark and messy. You only need a little bit of it.

Dilute the color by sticking the brush inside the water. Use a paper towel to get rid of the extra water. The big amount of water can ruin the macaron shells so be extra careful on this one.

TIP: Paint only half of the macaron shells. As you will sandwich two shells together later, there is no need to paint the bottom shell.

Personalized Mother’s Day macaron

Giving your mom a cute card on Mother’s Day is pretty common. Let’s do something different this year: write your graduation message right on a macaron!

This makes your Mother’s Day gift really stand out. Instead of a card, imagine your mom’s smile when she sees your message beautifully written on a macaron. It’s a sweet way to celebrate your big day and give her something delicious at the same time.

This idea is not just creative, it makes your gift very personal and special. It’s a great way to make this Mother’s Day one she will always remember.

The only thing you need for it is an edible food marker. I recommend writing the message on the paper before. This way you can be sure, that you get it perfect on the macarons later.

Making the filling for macarons

You can choose whatever filling you prefer for the macarons! I suggest you choose the one you think is the most enjoyable for your mom as it is a gift for her. As my mother likes strawberries and sparkling wine, I used these flavors to make my macarons for Mother’s Day in the past.

This strawberry and sparkling wine buttercream filling is super easy and quick to make!

  3. Add 3 oz (85 g) cream cheese and mix until even.
  4. Start adding 7 oz (200 g) powdered sugar. Do it slowly, little by little until all the sugar is in the mixture.
  5. Add a few drops of LorAnn Sparkling Wine Flavor and Lorann Strawberry Flavor.
  6. Add strawberry puree and pink food coloring. (optional)
  7. Mix until even and put it in the piping bag.
  8. Fill half of the macaron shells with the strawberry-sparking wine cream and sandwich the macarons together.

Decorating the Mother’s Day gift box

Once the macarons are ready, it is time to prepare the gift box! I always have some basic white cake boxes with windows ready at home for my macarons and other sweets. I love that I can always make the gift box look special for the person I’m going to gift it to.

Macaron gift box decoration tools

There are so many different ways to beautifully decorate the basic white cake box. For example, you can glue the label with a personal note on it, post seasonal stickers, tie a ribbon bow on it, etc.

For this occasion, I am going to add artificial peonies to the macaron box! You just need a few artificial flowers and a hot glue gun for it. You don’t have to particularly use the peonies and can use whatever flowers your mom loves! You won’t even need a flower bouquet as you already have the flowers in the gift box.

Decorating the gift box

At first, cut the flower heads off from the stalk.

Plug in the hot glue gun and wait for it to warm up. Be careful not to burn your fingers! Once the glue stick is hot and ready to use, press a little drop of the glue on the corner of the window box.

Make sure you are not putting the glue straight onto the window – the window material will melt from the hot glue and you will end up having a hole in it.

Cut out the right size of tissue paper and put it in the box. The tissue paper should be a little bigger in size than the cake box itself. You can totally go without tissue paper, but it makes the gift box a lot prettier and more luxurious.

Take the macarons out of the fridge and gently place them into the box on the tissue paper. Feel free to place them according to your preferences. Sprinkle the macarons over with mini marshmallows if your mom loves them!

You can prepare macrons a few days before the special occasion. Just remember to keep your macarons in a closed box in the fridge. Macarons taste best on the second and third day so keep that in mind before baking!

Enjoy your macarons!
